Course description:
AI is the best assistant language teachers can ask for: It can generate vocabulary or texts at the right level for our students – on topics they are interested in! More importantly, it can interact with them realistically about anything they need or care to talk about, and provide them with feedback on how well they are doing!
This course aims (among other things) to show teachers how to use AI to come up with what we need and how to guide AI to adjust the level of language to that of our students. It also aims to demonstrate at least forty practical activities that colleagues can use with their students immediately – and that students can use on their own as well.
In addition, the course aims to show teachers a range of sites (e.g. The British Council, ELLLO, English Practice Net, etc.) which offer free, ready-to-use, graded, good quality teaching and testing material (texts, exercises, listening tracks, quizzes etc.) which colleagues can use either in the absence of a coursebook or to supplement the latter, as well as a range of simple tools (e.g. Quizlet, Padlet, Cueprompter) which can make learning both more efficient and more enjoyable and which can cut down preparation time by at least 80%.
Participants:
This course is intended for both pre-service and in-service language teachers.
Course Duration:
10 hours
Delivery - Evaluation:
Online webinars. Five sessions of two hours each, over five weeks.
The evaluation comprises a Multiple-Choice test at the end of the course, as well as five mini assignments (one after each session) in which participants will be asked to use AI or one of the online tools in order to prepare activities or other materials for their students.
All successful participants will receive a ‘Certificate in Using Technology for ELT’ from GlobalCert.
The Instructor:
Nick Michelioudakis (B. Econ., Dip. RSA, MSc [TEFL]) has been active in ELT for many years as a teacher, examiner, presenter and teacher trainer. He has worked for many publishers and examination boards and he has given seminars and workshops in numerous countries.
He has written extensively on Methodology, though he is better known for his ‘Psychology and ELT’ articles which have appeared in numerous newsletters and magazines.
His areas of interest include Psychology, Student Motivation, Learner Independence, Teaching one-to-one and Humour.

- AI and the Four Skills: From gamifying listening, to making writing fun, to producing tailor-made texts for reading practice AI can help revolutionise skills work.
- Reading: This session looks at free sites with a huge amount of texts and activities – all grarded for level, as well as tools for improving reading speed.
- Listening: This session looks at free sites offering audio and video clips, along with exercises and the scripts. It also looks at free audio stories and books graded for level.
- Speaking: This session looks at how learners can learn to produce longer turns, improve their accuracy, use more advanced vocabulary and paraphrase when they are stuck.

The course aims to equip participants with basic knowledge of some AI tools as well as other web tools, so they can help their students learn language faster and more efficiently. In addition, it aims to show participants useful sites with free teaching material and demonstrate at least 30 practical activities they can use in both a face-to-face and an online setting.
